Hello everyone,

In this lesson, you'll learn how to set up Element 1 of a Million Dollar Store - Free Shipping.
I recommended free shipping for several reasons:
  • To give your new online store a clear advantage in its beginning stages
  • To simplify shipping in a world where shipping costs can eat up all your profits before you know it
  • Because shoppers are less likely to abandon your shopping cart (shipping costs are one of the biggest reasons they often do)
Here's an article I found tonight about shopping cart abandonment and what you can do about it:

In the past, I've found that setting up shipping rates is extremely complicated. I found that basing shipping rates on a percentage rate of the total sale seemed to get about as close as I was going to get. I usually set it somewhere between 35% to 40%. I arrived at this number by testing a lot of different products I sell.

I had small items, so this is a good system. If you have large, heavy items and live in a place where shipping is outrageously expensive, setting up shipping weights as your criteria might be a better option.

For now, just to get you started, it's best to offer free shipping worldwide.

Step 1) Login to your Admin Dashboard

Click on Settings (down at the very bottom left of the screen)

Click on Shipping

Step 2) The first box you see says "Shipping Origin." You will want to make sure your company's name and address are correct here.

Step 3) Further down, you will see "Zones And Rates" with a box that says "Shipping Zones."

Click on "Add Shipping Zone."

Name the zone "United States and Territories." This title will not be seen by your customer but will just be used so you know what zone it is.

Click on "Add Countries."

Choose just the United States. (I will explain why in a minute)

Click "Add"

Scroll down further

Click on "Add Rate" under "Price Based Rates"

Enter "United States FREE Shipping" (or whatever country you live in)  in the Box (your customers will see this title when they are checking out)

Scroll down and click on the check box under "Rate" that says "Free Shipping"
Click "Done."

IMPORTANT NOTE: This will keep you out of hot water as a business owner., if you are in the United States. There are a lot of sanctions against Russia at the time of this writing. The details of those sanctions are not completely clear at this time (Sept 2017). This may change in the future, but I don't see it happening any time soon. Companies in the United States are not allowed to do business with Russia. You'll see why I created one shipping zone for the U.S. and one for the rest of the world (then removed Russia) because of these sanctions.

Step 4) Click on the link at the top that says "Shipping" to go back to your main shipping page (if you're not already there)

Scroll down to the "Shipping Zone" box.

Click on "Add Shipping Zone."

Type in "Rest of the World Free Shipping" (this is just for your use to see when managing your shipping zones in the future)

Click on "Add Countries

Click on other countries you want to ship to by using the region categories.

Click "Add"

Once you are back to the previous screen, click on the button that says "Show More Countries."  Scroll down and click on the X's next to any countries you don't want to ship to. Click the "Save" button at the top right of the screen.

The system tells you (in the yellow box) that you don't have any rates set for this zone you just created.

Click on "Add Rate" in the "Price Based Rates" box.

Type "Free Shipping Worldwide" in the name box

Click on the "Free Shipping" checkbox under the "Rate" section.

Click "Done."

Step 5) Click on the "Save" button either on the top right or the bottom of the page.
All done! Free shipping is set up for all your future orders.
